The Importance of Organic Search Results for Small Businesses
This ‘Guest Speaker’ article was written by John from Eggrage.
When running a standard business (one that is not based online) your marketing is relatively simple. You promote your business, and you wait for people to come. As an offline business the most influential factor on how many people come to your business premises is its location. If you are located in Central London on Oxford Street then by all rights you will get more people coming through than if your premises is on Sheep Lane in Wiltshire.
When it comes to online business however…. Well… its exactly the same.
Position Your Business in A Prominent Online Location
The best part about the internet is that you don’t have to relocate to get a great location for your business, you don’t even have to pay any additional overheads for having a prominent space on the web. It’s all virtual.
But how?
Well, the internet has a high street too, a street that a very large percentage of all internet users walk down every single day, and a high-street that is the sole source of millions and millions of pounds worth of users with high expendable incomes who spend a significant amount of money in this high-street’s shops every year.
So What Is This Illusive High-Street?
Well, it goes by the name Google, you may have heard of it once of twice before.
Google is host to just under 70% of all the searches that take place on the internet and is the largest revenue building tool that any online business can make use of. Ranking well in Google means a massive surge in the traffic through your ‘business premises’ (web site) and as a result; many many more sales.
So Why Isn’t Everyone Doing It?
Well.. everyone is! The main issue is that some people do it well, and hire a dedicated individual to manage their internet marketing and search engine optimization campaign, while others choose to ‘do it themselves’ which often hurts their business more than it helps it. To me, the smartest thing any business in the UK can do today is manage their online marketing campaign effectively, as this is where the potential success or failure of the future of your business really lies.
Lets take one of my clients as an example.
This business will remain nameless for several reasons, but I will give as much detail as I’m able to.
The client in question, started a small business retailing wine products only a couple of years ago, they started out with a small retail premises and started a website to sell their products online in addition to their physical shop. The business didn’t do particularly well, it made small profits, but nothing that was really significant enough to classify it as a ‘success’. They turned this around though, when they initiated their search engine optimization campaign, which, a couple of years down the line has yielded them top 5 positions for all the major wine product search terms (pretty much without exception).
As a result, they have been able to expand their business to receive products from international suppliers, and have become the number one retailer in the UK for a number of the manufacturers who’s products they supply.
They have just purchased their own warehouse and brand new retail location (which is really more of a showroom, as 90% of all their business is conducted online) but the point here is that they could afford to do all this purely from their online sales, that came from organic search results.
The success of this business is unparalleled, and its no secret why..
