Portfolio : Abilities First
The Brief:
Create a site for a not-for-profit organisation making it accessible to all users. Incorporate a cms backend so that the client can update the site by themselves.
Built using:
PHP, MySQL, Xhtml1.0 Strict, CSS2.1.
Features:
Accessibility was the top priority for this site. As a result, users are able to change the font size, the font type and can also use a high-contrast colour scheme. Additional accessibility features include:
- - Alternative text for all images
- - Title attribute for all hyperlinks
- - Semantic xhtml which makes it easier for screen readers to read the site
- - Stylesheets to aid user changes to the style of the page through their browser controls
- - Relative measurements wherever possible to provide an expandable screen area (minimize your browser window to 800 x 600 and you can still see all of the content, no need for lateral scrolling)
- - A ‘skip navigation’ button which is invisible to mouse users but will appear to keyboard users enabling them to skip the navigation on each page
- - The skip nav button is also picked up by screen readers
Testimonial:
..following initial discussions where our needs were identified, the speed of the process was very impressive. Elan were not only capable of explaining the technical side of things but did so at every stage of the development. Even we understood things once Elan explained, and we have no technical background at all..
